William Arthur Dicus Jr. (Bill) of Missoula passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014 at his home from a 9 month battle with cancer. He was born July 6, 1944 in Anderson, Indiana to William Arthur and Edith Dicus. He graduated high school in 1962 and attended Parsons College in Iowa. He married Winifred M. Gravrok in Glen Ellyn, Illinois on November 27, 1965. Bill and Winnie have two daughters, Charity and Stephanie.
Bill and Winnie moved to Missoula, Montana in 1969 where Bill pursued a Masters Degree at The U of M in Anthropology. He finally received that degree in 1976.
In August 1971, he joined the Missoula Police Department and worked until his retirement as a sergeant in October 1999. After retirement, Bill enjoyed part time work with the Forest Service. He enjoyed the trails at the Rattlesnake and Blue Mountain. He liked jogging (which we called the Dicus Shuffle), mountain biking, and talking to the people on the trails. In his younger days he loved playing tennis and cross country skiing. Bill spent many Saturdays at the Griz games, for he was an avid fan. He also enjoyed spending time with his friend Steve at Del's Place on Thursdays for lunch and over the last year, they had chocolate shakes often and caught up on 'Missoula Happenings.'
But the passion he will most be remembered for is his love of cars. He collected them, fixed them and his favorite was to race them. He belonged to the SCCA Organization for over 30 years all the way up to his last race in 2012. He loved summer Sundays in empty parking lots racing around the 'sea of orange cones' as he and other SCCA members tried to outwit, outrace and out last each other. More times than not, Bill and one of his Datsuns would bring home a winning time. Although he missed the 2013 racing season, he still enjoyed cars. In November of 2013, Bill could be seen driving his latest project up on the highway behind his house (going 110 MPH), a red 2004 Mazda Miata that he bought with 'only 21, 000 miles' on it.
Bill is survived by his wife Winnie, daughters Charity (Missoula) and Stephanie, son-in-law David, step grandson Tim (all of Salt Lake City), siblings Henry (FL), Tina (WA), and Mary (FL).
Please join us for a memorial to remember Bill and all his passions at Garden City Funeral Home on Friday, February 21, 2014 @ 2PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The American Cancer Society.
