MISSOULA — Vernon E. Underwood, 83, passed away on Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, 2013. He was born on July 4, 1929, to Charles and Sarah Underwood in east Fairview.
Vern was raised on a farm in east Fairview. He started driving truck at the age of 16 for his father, hauling products from their farm to various markets.
Vern enlisted in the Army in 1951, where he was sent to Fort Rucker in Alabama. He was assigned as a Cadruy to instruct and prepare men for the Korean War. Vern returned home in 1953, where he then worked in the construction industry, driving truck.
In June 1959, Vern met the love of his life, Amelia Longie, and they were married four months later on Sept. 26, 1959. Together they raised six children. They moved to various places before settling down in Missoula. Vern devoted his life to working and providing for his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. After losing his wife in February 1999, he enjoyed spending time with his family, planting his flowers and working on whatever project he had with his kids, whether it was fixing a lawn mower or rebuilding his old Ford. He also had a passion for playing cards and would spend hours playing rummy and laughing when he won. His life was his family, and he will be missed everyday
