Valarie Verno (Angle) Nooney, 83 a resident of Missoula, passed away with family and friends at her side on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at St. Patrick Hospital of natural causes.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1931, in Missoula, to Ross and Patricia (Gorman) Angle, who last lived on the family homestead cabin in Sula.
She graduated from Paxson Grade School and Missoula County High School Class of 1949 (aka "Skipper"), and attended the University of Montana where she was a Sigma Kappa; a candidate for Homecoming Queen in 1951 and a member of the underwater synchronicity swim group known as the Aquamaids. She married William J. Nooney in 1952 and worked part time for the family business.
She was a naturally gifted pen-and-ink artist, and eventually expanded her art to include acrylic and oil paintings. She was a master bridge player into her 80s; had an uncanny intuition, about people and events. She was able to easily unlock old combination locks and successfully guess numbers on a hand-held Roulette game.
She loved raising and caring for her four sons, "the 4 boys."
She also loved spending the summers at their cabin on Flathead Lake and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and had sense of humor and contagious laugh.
She spent the past 35 years traveling throughout the United States and Canada with her friend and neighbor, Eric Marler.
Val is survived by her four sons and their families, William R. Nooney of Missoula, Dr. Robert R. Nooney of Olympia, Washington, Thomas R. Nooney of Tacoma, Washington, and John P. Nooney of Woodland Hills, California, and her eight grandchildren; several nephews and nieces; many friends at Grizzly Peak and close friends of the family.
A memorial reception will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. at Garden City Funeral Home. According to her wishes, her ashes will be spread out in-and-around Flathead Lake.
