Thomas R. "Dick" Shugrue, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, due to metastatic lung disease.
He was born in Santa Monica, California, to the late Thomas Augustine and Mary LaJune (Taylor) Shugrue. Thomas attended Venice Elementary and High School until he was 17 years old when he left and enlisted into the U.S. Navy.
After boot camp in San Diego, he served on several naval destroyers – USS ships Mansfield, Frank E. Evans, Brister, Arnold J. Isabelle, Sanctuary, Turner Joy, and John A. Bole. He retired from the Navy as an E7 chief commissary from Ford Island at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after 21 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the John A. Bole Association and a member of the American Legion Post 40 Edenton, North Carolina.
He is preceded in death by Janice (Worley) Shugrue; Rose Marilyn (Conner) Shugrue and daughter Charolette Ann (Shugrue) Arthur. He is he is survived by his wife, Jane (Thomson Martin) Shugrue, whom he married in 1991. They travelled the U.S. several times in their motorhome, visiting family and friends before his illness. He is also survived by his son Thomas Robert Shugrue (Sheila) and their children, Brandon, Justin and Alyssa; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and John; granddaughter Melissa Pinosky and four great-grandchildren. As well as his wonderful aunt, Betty Taylor, cousins in Pleasanton, California, and all the Martin clan.
