Obituary for Susannah E. Huggins

Susie was born March 20, 1925, in Clagstone, Idaho, and passed peacefully Sept. 10, 2015, in her home of 51 years.

Susie was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Edward Huggins; her mother and father, George and Florence Grigg; and her five siblings. Susie attended Columbia Falls public schools and graduated in 1940. After finishing her summer job in 1940, Susie Grigg became Susie Huggins, eloping with her longtime sweetheart, "Fast Eddy" Huggins. They had $40 to their name, all their clothes in a wooden trunk and they headed to the woods, living and working in logging camps. They later moved back to Kalispell, where they started their family and Ed worked at the Hungry Horse Dam project during World War ll.

In 1952, Ed and Susie moved to Missoula, where Ed worked for Garrett Freight Lines and Susie worked 30-plus years for Buttreys/Osco. Susie retired from Buttreys/Osco in 1987 and joined her husband Ed traveling around the country to rodeos, horse shows and occasionally betting on a horse race or two. Susie loved flowers, the color blue, painting her house on Seventh Street blue and cultivating beautiful flower gardens on her little acre of heaven. Susie loved to play cards, especially crib and bingo with her girlfriends and other family members.

Susie is survived by her daughter, Carol (Bill) Thomas in Missoula, grandson Patrick (Marcia) in Dillon, and granddaughter Lisa Thomas and great-grandchildren Jessica and Jacob Redler in Missoula; son, Russell (Karen) Huggins in Reno, Nevada; son Larry (Kitt) Huggins in Missoula, grandson Bret (Gina) Huggins, and great-grandchildren Cooper and Hudson in Gypsum, Colorado.

Susie did not want a funeral and will be cremated, and her ashes buried beside her husband Ed at the family burial plots in Fairview Cemetery, Columbia Falls, next spring. Memorials can be sent to the University of Montana Athletic Department or the Human Society of Western Montana in Missoula.
