Obituary for Susan H Pfau

Susan Charlene Harris Pfau, 82, was born Dec. 13, 1934, and passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017, joining her father who died in a car accident when Susan was only 2 years old, and her beloved mother, Noma Asay Adams.

Her given name was Charlene, as evidence of her independence, in the fifth grade she changed her name to Susan in honor of her grandmother, also Susan.

Noma, Susan’s mother, owned a beauty shop in the center of town in Lovell, Wyoming. As a young child, Susan had the run of the town with her cousins in tow. She was armed and in charge. Amusing herself with pranks such as attaching her “wealthy” aunt’s wig on the mangy town dog.

Susan adored her baby brother Otis, who was born a week after their father’s death.

Cherished summers were spent with Susan and Otis riding horses at the ranger station with their grandpa and aunt which started a lifelong love of horses.

Susan played in the high school band mastering the saxophone and piano.

One of the bright spots in Susan’s life was when her baby sister Pam joined the family. A lifelong bond was then formed.

Moving to Stevensville as a junior in high school she met the love of her life Sabe Pfau. As she walked on the school bus she was tripped by a cute young man with dimples, as she gathered herself Sabe stuck his tongue out at her. It was love, maybe not at first sight; maybe second sight! They have been together ever since. They were married June 5, 1954, and will be together throughout eternity as they were sealed in the Ogden, Utah LDS Temple, July 12, 1972.

Throughout their 63 years of marriage our dad has been the greatest example of true and selfless love.

Mom was quick witted, quick tempered and always had a great story, never letting the facts get in the way of a good laugh. Dad was the policeman, but mom was the detective. Taking us kids to play ring and run, followed up with ice cream. She loved dressing up, never left the house without full hair and make-up. Before there was a neighborhood watch there was our mom, she could call the neighborhood to order with one whistle. She had a knack for shopping for the perfect outfit, which she handed down to us as hereditary trait. She loved scary movies such as Alfred Hitchcock which scared her so much she kept her children up to watch them with her, with homemade fudge and popcorn.

She was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enthusiastically served in many callings from Relief Society to the Nursery including Road Show’s which remain epic to this day.

She made everything that is ordinary, extraordinary.

Susan was preceded in death by her father, Otis Lewis Harris, her mother Noma Asay Adams, grandparents; YZ and Susan David, aunt Vivian Harris aka: her partner in crime in Vegas and grandson Michael Pfau.

Survived by: Her sweet husband, Sabe Pfau. Her four daughters and one son: Kathleen (Robert) Farnes, Karen (Randy) Lane, Kimberlee (Dirk) Visser, Scott (April) Pfau, Kristina (Shawn) Cather; 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; brother, Otis Lewis Harris; sister, Pam (Nick) Fanelli and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dad would like everyone to remember this is a time of loss yet a time of joy, happiness and remembrance for we know we will be together again.

Our family would like to thank The Village Health Care for the exceptional care, love, attention and friendship; The CNAs, nurses, housekeeper’s and of course kitchen staff for taking excellent care of our mom and dad.

A viewing will be held Friday, April 7, at Garden City Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 8, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3050 South Avenue West, Missoula, with a viewing beginning at 10 a.m. and the service beginning at 11 a.m. Condolences can be left for the family atgardencityfh.com.
