Sonya M. Newbreast

Sonya Newbreast, 56, of Missoula passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024.  A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Garden City Funeral Home.  The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m., in the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery.  Online condolences may be left at gardencityfh.com.

Sonya Marie Newbreast, daughter of Elizabeth Madplume, was born May 4, 1967 in Yakima, Washington.  She graduated from Ronan High School and continued her education at Salish Kootenai College obtaining a Bachelor Degree in Nursing.  Sonya met Robert Newbreast and the couple was united in marriage on November 7, 2007 in Havre, Montana.

Sonya had a passion for caring for others and built a great rapport with all the patients she served throughout her years as a nurse.   She took great pride in her Blackfeet heritage and often participated in Blackfeet ceremonies.  Sonya had an artistic eye and was a talented interior decorator.  She also enjoyed putting together beautiful floral arrangements for her family and friends. Sonya’s grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved spending time with them; especially taking them shopping.  Above all else, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed.  

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert Newbreast; children, Elizabeth Salway; Catherine Salway; Gabe Renville; grandchildren, Jabez Madplume; Arorah Madplume; Perssius Madplume; Jeremy “Bobby” Amaya, Jr.; Aries Crossguns; Nero Crossguns; siblings, Paul (Rhonda) Hendren; Gregory “Moe” Madplume; dear friend, Matt Mahea; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Sonya was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Madplume and grandfather/protector, Xavier “Dot” Bullcalf.
