On the morning of Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, Shirley Mae Schaff-Day, 79, of Missoula, passed away peacefully with her family. The sun came out for her as she went to be with God.
Shirley was a true Montana girl, born and raised in Missoula. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, going on to attend the University of Montana. She earned her master's in education and served as the principal of DeSmet School for over 30 years. She was passionate and dedicated to both staff and her students at DeSmet.
After her professional career, Shirley loved to travel; her favorite destination was Europe. She devoted much of her time to volunteering at St. Patrick Hospital. A devout Catholic, Shirley attended regular services at St. Francis Xavier Church. Notably, Shirley was an avid gardener, believing that sunshine was the cure for all and always stopped to enjoy the scenery. She was a lover of all animals, especially her Boston Terriers (and Schipperke!).
Shirley is survived by her three children and three grandchildren, Michael Day and his wife Bobbi; Brian Day, his wife Manisha, and their two children, Kieran and Maya; and Lesa Day and her daughter, Kellen. Her mother, father and nine siblings precede her in death.
A small service will be held on Thursday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Missoula. She was a wonderful mother, a loving grandmother, and is truly missed.
