MISSOULA - Sally Elizabeth Kraemer Wehmeyer, 87, passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at St. Patrick Hospital.
She was born on March 15, 1921, in Cold Spring, Minn., the third of Adam and Mary Kraemer’s 12 children. When Sally was just 14, her mother passed away, leaving behind a dozen mouths to feed in the midst of the Great Depression. Sally left school and stayed at home so that she could keep food on the table for her large family. Four years later, she moved to Milwaukee, where she lived with her aunt and worked as a nurse’s aide.
One night at the Million Dollar Ballroom in Milwaukee, a young man stationed at the Great Lakes Navy Base asked Sally to dance. His name was Ray Wehmeyer. They married in 1944, and later moved back to Ray’s hometown of Winthrop, Wash., where they had four children together. After brief periods in Tillamook, Ore., and Yakima, Wash., they made their home in Missoula beginning in 1965.
Sally thrived on being social. At church, she volunteered countless hours and took special care in helping new parishioners get acquainted. At home, she loved to cook both for friends and family, and she was known to send large boxes of cookies to far-off grandsons. She quilted, gardened and squaredanced.
She loved her dominoes and played a mean game of rummy. Sally will be missed terribly. She spent her last days surrounded by those whose lives she touched, and she passed away knowing how deeply she was loved.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and Partners Hospice for the wonderful care that Sally received during her time at St. Patrick Hospital.
She is now reunited with her beloved son Kim, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband; and by her three children, Pat (Wally) Jensen of Spokane, Mike (Sue) Wehmeyer of Missoula and Kirk (Marilyn) Wehmeyer of
Billings; along with seven grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Blessed Trinity Church, 1475 Eaton St., Missoula, and a memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9.
In lieu of flowers, Sally requested that you send memorial contributions to Blessed Trinity Church; the Missoula Food Bank, 219 S. Third St. W., or the charity of your choice.
