Ronald W. Martino, Jr.
Ron Martino, 51, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at his Missoula home.
He was born in Columbus, OH, on June 25, 1961, and moved to Missoula in 1979 to attend the School of Forestry at the University of Montana. In 1995, Ron met Peggy Dodson, whom he later married on May 31, 2003, in a lovely nontraditional ceremony in the Lubrecht Experimental Forest.
Ron had a few different occupations during his time in Missoula, including direct care for individuals with disabilities and, most recently, 10 years of employment at KECI-TV, where he performed a variety of tasks in several diverse roles during his time there.
Over the years, Ron participated in numerous activities and organizations, including Geocaching, the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), and MisCon. In addition to taking part as a player in Geocaching, he volunteered as a reviewer who helped to monitor and publish caches, ensuring the integrity of the game and the safety of its participants. He was a beloved fixture in the SCA, mentoring, volunteering, teaching, and helping any who needed it, finally earning The Pelican, a service award bestowed only to those who were truly dedicated to improving people's knowledge of history and to assisting in whatever way was necessary. Ron was also an integral part of the local science fiction convention, MisCon, which he helped to found and organize over 25 years ago.
Ron was passionate about world events, environmental issues, and seeing justice done for all living things. He was thoughtful, fair-minded, logical, and socially progressive. History and technology were two of his greatest loves, and his zeal for science was unmatched.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeannette K. Teets.
Ron was extremely dedicated to his family and is survived by his loving family members Peggy Martino & Miriam Woodley. He also leaves behind a brother, Robert Martino of Arizona; a sister, Rebecca Suarez of Ohio; and his father, Ronald W. Martino, Sr., of Ohio.
Ron's wish was to be cremated, and a memorial service/wake will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the home he loved so well.
Cremation is under the care of Garden City Funeral Home. Condolences and memories may be left for the family at www.missoulafuneralhomes.com
