Obituary for Robert D. "Duke" Speer

Robert D. "Duke" Speer, 65, of Big Arm, passed away at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. He was born in Conrad on Feb. 22, 1949, to Dorothy and Robert David Speer. He graduated from high school in Simms, and served in the Air National Guard for eight years and the Army National Guard for two years.

Duke worked as a firefighter at Glasgow Air Force Base, a police officer in Fort Peck, a sheriff deputy in Mineral County, the undersheriff in Garfield County and worked for a credit association. He also sold motorcycles, raced snowmobiles, raced and raised horses and was an artist in lead and metal figures of historical figures and scenes. He had a passion for history and loved farm life, but the true joy of his life was his niece, Kaylee Fleig.

His family includes a sister, Debra Fleig and brother-in-law Alex Fleig of Missoula; a brother, Greg Speer and sister-in-law Rose of Glasgow; nephew Zeb Speer and his wife Cedar and their son Ocean of South Dakota; and many cousins, aunts and uncles in Montana and South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and friends. Arrangements are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
