Obituary for Robert H "Ty" Robinson

Long time Missoula attorney, Robert H. “Ty” Robinson, 102, of Missoula, was called into the loving arms of his Savior, Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at the Community Medical Center with his son John and his daughter in law Anita at his side. He was born January 25, 1916 in Columbia Falls, the son of Calvin and Berta Ella Green Robinson. He graduated from Flathead County High School in 1933, serving as the senior class president and captain of the 1933 Flathead Braves Basketball Team. In 1940, he received a BA degree from the UofM where he played on the 1937-1939 basketball teams and was active in campus life.

He married Jean E. Fritz on November 23, 1939 and raised two sons, John and Laird. He served in the US Border Patrol and in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre, before returning to the UofM where he received a juris doctorate degree in 1948. That year, he began his legal career as in-house counsel for the Missoula Merc. In 1954, he joined Jim Garlington and Sherman Lohn in forming the present law firm of Garlington, Lohn & Robinson, from which he retired in 1987 to become “Of Counsel”.

As a man with a heart for his community, he served on more boards, associations, civic and business groups and organizations than we have room to list, but some of the more notable include: Community Medical Center Trustee and Foundation President and Chairman, Boy Scouts Council President, Chamber President and “George Award” recipient, Railroad Assn Legislative Director, Missoula and Kalispell Merc. Director, South Missoula Land Co. President, Missoula Symphony Assn Officer, Montana Member of the Whitehouse Education Committee under appointment of 3 governors, received the Distinguished Service Award for his commitment to the UofM, Missoula Rotary, Masonic Lodge #13, Scottish Rite and Algeria Shrine Temple and the American Legion. He was also a member of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church and served many years on its vestry and memorial foundation.

Ty was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean and son Laird and a brother Calvin. His family includes a son, John (Anita), grandchildren Marie (Don) Rasmussen, Tracy (Bob) Roullier, Wendy Compton, Tyler Robinson, Calvin (Christine) Robinson, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and 2 nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at Garden City Funeral Home on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11am followed by a reception in the funeral home’s community room. Prior to the service, Ty’s urn will be placed privately at the Missoula Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to the GSA (Grizzly Scholarship Assn) or to the Shrine Hospital, 911 W. 5th Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.
