Robert "Bunny" L. Albert, 91, of Missoula, died of natural causes Sunday, April 26, 2015, in Nampa, Idaho.
Robert was born Feb. 26, 1924, to Leland D. and Myrtle M. Albert in Missoula. He was raised and educated in the Missoula area. Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 1943. He was a Machinist Mate on the USS Maryland during World War II. He had numerous active tours in the Pacific, and encountered many battles. His last tour of duty on the USS Maryland was to return Pacific theater POWs back to the states.
After World War II, Robert moved to Alaska and worked various jobs, including caretaking, trapping and working on the highway system. In addition to his passion for Alaska he enjoyed golfing and bowling where he won many awards. Robert also had a love for the outdoors and hunted as often as he could.
Returning to Missoula in 1951, he was employed at the White Pine and Sash for approximately seven years before moving onto the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1985. During his retirement, he worked part-time as a greenskeeper at Larchmont Golf Course for over 10 years, which enabled him to play his favorite sport – golf – daily. He continued to play golf until his health turned for the worse at 89 years old.
He was married to Norma Tucker in 1954 to 1960, and together they had one child, Theresa Marie.
He later married Louise A. Blevins on Aug. 4, 1962, in Hamilton. Together they had two children, Brenda L. and Janet L. Albert.
He is survived by his wife, Louise; sister Marylee Staedler of Anaconda; brother David Albert of Portland, Oregon; daughters, Brenda Larson of Nampa and Janet Banaugh of Spokane; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Myrtle Albert; sister Mae Bequette; brother Al Albert and his daughter, Theresa Marie Rickard.
