Richard Childers Krumm, 76, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Hillside Manor of complications following two years of treatment for Merkel cell cancer.
Richard was born Feb. 16, 1938, to Wilbert and Margaret Krumm in Washington, D.C. In 1943, his family moved to Missoula, where his father served as the meteorologist-in-charge of the U.S. weather station.
Richard graduated from Missoula Sentinel High School in 1956. He graduated from the University of Montana in 1960, majoring in Spanish with a double minor in French and mathematics.
His first job was at Gilroy Union High School (1960 -1964) in Gilroy, California, where he taught Spanish, French and math for four years. Richard returned to Montana and taught French and math at Central Junior High School (1964-1967) in Kalispell for another three years. During his teaching years, Richard participated in two summer institutes – mathematics at Fresno State University and French at Utah State University.
Banking became Richard's new calling, and he attended the Garvin Graduate School of International Management, graduating with a Bachelor of Foreign Trade degree in banking and finance in June 1968. Richard accepted a job with the French American Banking Corp., a subsidiary of Banque Nationale de Paris. He worked his way up in the organization, becoming an assistant vice president of operations, and retired after 31 years with the bank. After moving back to Missoula, Richard eased into retirement by working for the Montana Legal Services Association, Missoula County Clerk's Office and O'Brien Law Office.
Richard had a great love for the University of Montana and was an ardent supporter of the UM Foundation and the Davidson Honors College. Planned giving instruments offered Krumm a means to participate in the University of Montana Capital Campaign at the Leadership Gift level. Ten students were scholarship recipients during Richard's life and he had a great friendship with each one. He was also a member of the Heritage Society.
Krumm was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his sister, Mary Gully of Salt Lake City; his brother, Donald Krumm of Washington, D.C.; nieces, Paula Gully of Salt Lake City, Jill Gully of Los Angeles and Marybeth Krumm of Hanoi, Vietnam; nephews, Ben Gully of Provo, Utah, Mark Gully of Eugene, Oregon, and Mark Krumm of Canberra, Australia; and many dear friends.
The family wants to give a special thank you to Dr. Linda Ries and Dr. Margaret Menendez at St. Patrick Hospital for their wonderful care of Richard. We also want to thank Partners Hospice, Home Instead and Hillside Manor for helping to make Richard's last days comfortable.
Richard's final resting place is Conrad Cemetery in Kalispell
