MISSOULA – Phyllis Marguerite Slette Stillwell, 92, passed away March 14, 2014 at Riverside Health Care Center of natural causes. Phyllis was born to Ole and Agnes Slette in Evansville Minnesota on January 17, 1922. After graduating from high school Phyllis attended the University of Minnesota, and worked for Federal Cartridge until entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. Phyllis received her basic training in Camp Lejuene N.C. After her advanced training Phyllis was stationed at Cherry Point N.C.; Phyllis (now a sergeant) taught Celestial Navigation to Marine Pilots. While there she met the Love of her Life, Marine Staff Sergeant Raymond Stillwell. They were married in New Bern N.C. and lived there until they were honorably discharged, shortly after the end of WWII. Phyllis was very proud to be a Marine; she had the honor to serve her country during WWII as her father had served as a Marine during WWI. After their discharge Phyllis and Ray moved to Texas and then to Southern California where they enjoyed living, loving, exploring, and raising five wonderful children whom they dearly loved, Robert Stillwell, Susan Lafo, Barbara Boyer, Lindsay McKay, and Terrilou French. Phyllis was an active member of the AAUW for more than 60 years. Later in life Ray and Phyllis moved to Frenchtown to live with her daughter and son-in-law Lindsay, and Jimmie McKay. A Military Honors Service will be held at 2 pm April 11, 2014 at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Missoula MT where she will be placed beside her loving husband Ray. A Reception will follow in Frenchtown.
Cremation was under the care of Garden City Funeral & Crematory. Condolences and memories may be left for the family at www.missoulafuneralhomes.com
