Paul Gerard Befumo, 59, of Missoula, passed away Thursday, Oct 8, 2015, at his home, surrounded by loved ones.
Paul was born Dec. 19, 1955, to Doris and Paul Befumo in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Catholic schools and then Brooklyn College, where he earned a degree in biology and education. After college, Paul joined the Army as a scientist. His work as a microbiologist eventually brought him to Missoula, where he worked in Dr. Barbara Wright's lab at the University of Montana. Paul also spent several years teaching and leading outdoor activities at the Spring Creek School in Thompson Falls, where he had the opportunity to positively affect the lives of many troubled youths. Ultimately, Paul found his way into law school at UM, and upon graduation, settled on a career in estate planning.
Paul became a family man in 1995 when he met Laura Lee, the love of his life, and her son, Will Richardson. Paul and Laura added twin sons to the family in 1997, and the three boys were the center of Paul's universe. He was so very proud of all of them for their unique styles and talents, and especially enjoyed their musical and creative pursuits.
Paul enjoyed all the sports the west offered in every season, but his passion for the past 17 years had been Tae Kwon Do. Paul achieved the level of 2nd Dan black belt in 2011, three years after diagnosis and treatments for terminal brain cancer.
Paul had a will of iron, a heart of gold and a spirit of azure. He will be greatly missed by his surviving family: spouse, Laura Lee; stepson, Will Richardson; sons, Luke and Arthur Befumo; mother, Doris Befumo; brothers, Joseph (Paula), Robert (Carmen) and Andrew (Shelly); along with many aunts and uncles. The family is planning a celebration of Paul's life to take place in the spring.
Go in peace, dear friend, and we will meet again in calmer waters.
