Neil went home to his Lord and Savior, peacefully in his sleep, on May 27, 2017. He was born on March 1, 1926, to Dale T. Shook and Amy Katheryn Heselroad in Greene, Iowa. Neil married Barbara Don Tigny on May 19, 1951, in Missoula.
Most of his working career he was a postal clerk in Missoula. He belonged to the Elks and Accordion Jamboree. Neil enjoyed hunting and fishing with several really good friends.
He served his country in the Occupation Forces of Japan at the end of World War II. Neil was proud to have met General MacArthur. He enjoyed telling stories of all his experiences. While in Japan, he had a medical issue that required surgery. During the surgery, he died but a full colonel came into the room and told the doctors what to do to save him. Afterward, he had to get on a train to return to his base. The colonel disappeared and Neil believed it was an angel as no one knew that colonel.
Neil lived with his wife, Barbara, in the same house for 65 years that her father built for them. Neil later built the garage and patio.
Paul was born in 1956, their only child. He was very proud of Paul and all his accomplishments. In later years as Neil became more bent over from polio he had as a child he would ask Paul whenever he came to visit, “are you still growing”?
Neil was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna Bridenstein; a niece and nephew; and several loved aunts. Neil is survived by his wife, Barbara; son Paul and his wife Joan; brothers-in-law Byron Don Tigny (Joyce) and Jerry Don Tigny (Pat).
