Myron Floyd Jakober (aka “Red”), age 80, passed away at Saint Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula, Montana on Tuesday, October 10th, 2023 with family present. Myron was born to Edward Jakober and Mary (Bertsch) Jakober in Eureka, South Dakota on August 9th, 1943. Myron is survived by his four children, sons Michael, Deron, and Jason and daughter Stefanie, and grandchildren Sarah, Dawson, Shane, and Ryan. Myron was preceded in death by his parents and wife Helen.
Myron spent the first 18 years of his life helping his parents farm on the family farm near Hillsview, South Dakota. After graduating from Eureka High School in 1961, Myron enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served four years as a military policeman on Johnston Island in the Pacific and at bases in Havre and Great Falls, Montana. After being honorably discharged in 1965, Myron moved back to Eureka, South Dakota where he met and married Helen and they settled down and raised their four children. Myron was a member of the Eureka Ambulance Service, the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 186, and VFW Post 5126. Myron and Helen moved their family to Missoula, Montana in 1977, where Myron worked in several log and paper mills before retiring in 2008.
After retiring, Myron spent his time landscaping his yard and tending to his flower beds. He loved to take early morning walks around the yard photographing all of the beauty surrounding him. He also enjoyed rooting for his favorite baseball (Twins) and football (Vikings) teams on radio and TV, solving crossword puzzles, and reading. Myron especially treasured annual get-togethers with his Johnston Island USAF buddies and their families at various places across the country.
Myron had a big personality with a kind and generous heart. He will be missed very much by all whose lives he touched.
A graveside burial service will be held at the Western Montana State Veteran’s Cemetery in Missoula, Montana on Monday, November 6th at 1:00 PM. The cemetery is located at 1911 Tower Street.
There will be a reception following the veterans service at the Wren Hotel, 201 E. Main St. Missoula. from 2pm until 5pm.
