Michael Wong, beloved brother, uncle and friend, died in Missoula on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was born in Helena on Nov. 17, 1952, to Fred and Ella Wong.
Bright, studious and curious, Mike served as a page in the Montana Legislature. In addition to his high school scholastic achievements, he was active in student government. He graduated from the University of Montana.
He found his dream job in the company of men and women he considered family the summer he worked for the Forest Service just out of high school. He continued his career in several locations and jobs throughout his life. Highlights included his work on a "Hot Shot" firefighting crew and as part of a group sent to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. Mike continued his Forest Service career in Bozeman and as Equal Employment Manager in Madison. He was part of a national wildfire coordinating group representing a Fire Incident Pilot Project, later served on the Northern Rockies Coordinating Group and as Finance Manager while in Missoula.
A voracious reader and lifelong learner, Mike could discuss everything from Frank Lloyd Wright to the Mann Gulch Fire. We will miss his dry humor, his thoughtfulness, his wisdom and his authenticity.
Mike is survived by his family, Crystal Wong Shors (Dave), Peggy Wong Chamberlain (Jim), Steve (Deb) Wong, and Jeff Wong, all of Helena; Fred Wong of Phoenix and his best friend Ed Albertini.
Also surviving are nieces, Sara Wong, Hannah Wong, Chanda Wong Beppu, Amy Wong Little; nephews, Michael Hahn, Jeff Chamberlain and Quinn Chamberlain. In Missoula, the Wiles and Traver families survive.
Services in Helena are Wednesday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m., Myrna Loy Theater, 15 N. Ewing, reception at the Montana Historical Society, 225 N. Roberts. Friends may make donations to the Montana Historical Society or the charity of choice.
