Michael Smith

January 25, 1944 — July 4, 2024

Florence

Michael Robert Smith, a good man, passed away at his home in Florence on July 4, 2024. He was born on January 25, 1944 in Seattle. He was, first and foremost, a gentleman. Mike was a big guy who had a big generous heart to match. With his engaging smile, natural charm, and distinctive mellifluous voice, he would warm a room by walking into it.

Mike was a family man, sports fan, and connoisseur of beer. An avid fisherman, he also was a fishing guide on the Clearwater River. As a sports fan, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of both men's and women's sports, particularly baseball, football, basketball, golf, and tennis. He loved the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks, the UofM Griz, Gonzaga teams, and others too numerous to mention.

Mike spent his working life as a telephone technician and lineman for GTE/Verizon in Orofino, Idaho, a job which he loved.

Mike was a kind, well-spoken man with a keen sense of humor and a love of good books. He was a Vietnam vet who never spoke of it. We who had the good fortune to know him will miss him dearly.

Most of all, Mike loved family and gave generously and joyously of his time, love, and talents. He was a loving husband, father, and wonderful Grandpa who thought up fun activities and adventures which he enjoyed as much as his grandkids.

Mike is survived by his spouse, Kerry, daughter Sheri (Bill) and their 3 children, Nate, Logan and Maddie, his stepdaughter Sue (Rob) and their two daughters, Jacey and Riley, stepdaughter Tricia (Bob) and their two daughters, Gracie and Shae, siblings Candee, Bonnie, and Jimmy, as well as four great grandchildren. Mike is also survived by his constant friend and companion, his dog Griz, who was a big love in his life.

Mike's preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Patt, his daughter Annette, his grandson Joe, and his brother Greg.

A special thanks to sister Dee for capturing the essence of Mike's life and putting it into words and a special thanks to Tricia for being Mike's #1 caregiver.
