Michael Mahnken Marcus McCarthy, died peacefully of natural causes at his residence in Missoula on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at the age of 74. Mike was born in Butte on April 4, 1940. He was the son of Daniel F. and Loretta Nelson McCarthy. In 1944 the family moved to Missoula.
Michael attended St. Anthony Grade School and graduated from Missoula County High School in 1958. He received his degree from the University of Montana in education. He enjoyed his years at the university immensely and the friendships he made with several of his professors. While attending UM, Mike was a strong advocate for students with disabilities and was involved in organizing the Coordinating Council for the Handicapped on campus.
As a young man, Michael worked tirelessly to assist people with disabilities. He put much time and effort into establishing the Western Montana Epilepsy Association. He also attended the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped in Washington D.C. In addition, Mike enjoyed his time teaching arts and crafts to those with developmental disabilities. He never let his own health issues stop him from reaching out to others in need.
Mike enjoyed knitting. He made several sweaters and created a beautiful Irish knit cable afghan for his sister. He was an avid reader and book collector. One could often find Mike in the kitchen whipping up a gigantic batch of fudge or pot of spaghetti sauce.
Mike was a devout Catholic. His Bible and Rosary were of great comfort to him throughout his life. His strong faith gave him strength to endure significant health challenges. He was a life long member of St. Anthony Parish.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Dick Giuliani and their children, John, Jessica, Mary, Sarah Giuliani and Angela Opitz. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to thank the staff and management of Bee Hive Homes in Missoula for the loving support they provided to Mike. Thank you as well to Dr. Peter Szekley and Dr. Stephen Johnson for their compassionate care.
Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Parish. Burial will be later in the afternoon at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial donations in Michael's name may be sent to St. Anthony Parish, 217 Tremont, Missoula, MT 59801.
