Obituary for Michael "Smick" Curran

Michael “Smick” Curran, 66, of Missoula passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017 on the USS Little Rock, of natural causes.

He was born on March 13, 1951 in Bedford, Ohio, to Ray and Kathleen Curran. He lived on the “Curran Hill,” until age 3, when the family moved to Glendora, California. In 1970 he joined the Navy, and was stationed on the USS Little Rock in Europe. Following his Naval service, Mike and a couple friends embarked on a memorable Caribbean sailing adventure. After a brief stint at sea, he returned to the US and in 1973 moved to Missoula, where he met the love of his life on Halloween, Sarah McNerney.

They married on Feb. 29, 1988. Mike loved to joke that he only had to buy an anniversary gift every 4 years.

He was a member of the Laborers Union for over 40 years. Always willing to lend a helping hand, he took great joy in helping anyone and everyone he met, and throughout his career he mentored many at Missoula Sheet Metal. Upon retirement Smick dedicated his time to various charitable organizations. He loved volunteering at Meals on Wheels, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), the Missoula Senior Citizens Center, and served as an Missoula County Election Judge.

A fearless dreamer, he marched to the beat of his own drum. You’d never see him without his signature bandana, or flashing the peace sign, and he had an affinity for vibrant Hawaiian shirts.

He was passionate about many unique and varied pursuits. He enjoyed sailing, gambling, watching the Griz, taking walks, building haunted houses, winning blue ribbons for baked goods at the county fair, and traveling. A true Pisces, he made sure to check his horoscope everyday. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Mike is survived by his wife Sarah, a son, Aiden, and a daughter, Reilly. He is also survived by many siblings and a large extended family.

Visitation will be on Monday, 2-4 at Garden City Funeral Home, followed by a celebration of life at The Public House (130 E. Broadway St.) from 3-6 pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send donations to Missoula Meals on Wheels.
