Obituary for Maxine Maynard Hewitt

MAXINE DORA MAYNARD HEWITT
October 19, 1924 – March 27, 2014

Maxine's life began in a little house on the prairie in Hecla, SD. The youngest of eight children she was baptized soon after and spent her life faithfully loving the Lord Jesus Christ. Being blessed with a beautiful soprano voice she sang at church and everywhere she went. Her kids all remember her happily humming and singing no matter the task. Mama put in big gardens, canned the produce, baked bread, cut hair and sewed new clothes. She also enjoyed playing cards, embroidering and reading; but the job she loved most was taking care of her five babies.

On December 19, 1942 she and John Hewitt were married in Chicago. During their 60 years together they moved several times and later traveled extensively around the U.S. When Missoula was their home she worked at Bug's Bar-B-Q making lots of friends there. She joined the Sweet Adeline's while Dad sang in the Rocky Mountaineers. They both sang in church choirs wherever they were. Losing her singing voice and the ability to attend church were her greatest personal losses, but she often said these past twelve years living with her daughter were the best ones of her life.

Maxine was preceded in death by her mother Dora; her father, William; all of her siblings; her husband, John; his mother, Etta; and two precious grandsons, Daniel and Karl.

Survivors include daughter Sharelle and Tom Jelly of Columbus; daughter Diane Langve of Laurel; son John and Faith Hewitt of Clinton; daughter Valerie and Jerry Murphy of Missoula; and son Calvin and Susan Hewitt of Helena. She has 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren with two more due this year; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is brother-in-law Marvin and Rita Hewitt; several nieces and nephews all of whom were special to her; and friends and extended family around the country. She remembered each and every one until the end.

Maxine always had a heart for little children so the family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church for children's programs or any organization that promotes the health and well-being of children.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 6 at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 402 Strand St. in Missoula. Sunset Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
