Mathilda "Tillie" Gaub, a longtime resident of Eastern Montana and Billings who had lived in Missoula for the past 17 years, died on Saturday, November 15, at Missoula Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Gaub was born on June 8, 1928, in rural Dawson County, to Eva (Schock) Neiffer and John Neiffer. She was the eighth of their nine children and the final survivor of her siblings at the time of her death.
Educated in Dawson County schools through the eighth grade, Mrs. Gaub later earned her GED in Billings.
She married William Gaub on June 18, 1950, at a rural Lutheran church near Fallon, Montana. She and Mr. Gaub began sugar-beet farming near Terry, in the early 1950s.
In 1959, the couple moved to the farm home of her father, south of Glendive. The family continued farming there until they moved to Miles City in 1962.
The Gaubs moved to Billings in 1967. While their six children progressed through junior high school, high school and college and into adulthood, Mrs. Gaub and her husband remained Billings residents until moving to Missoula in 1997.
Mrs. Gaub was a homemaker until her youngest child, Tim, entered the seventh grade. Then she began working outside the home, in food preparation and as a hostess for several Billings and Missoula restaurants. She also was a care attendant at St. John's Nursing Home in Billings.
She had been an Alzheimer's patient since 2004, residing at Edgewood Vista and Rosetta Assisting Living before her care needs required transferring her to Missoula Health and Rehabilitation in October 2013.
Mr. Gaub preceded her in death in April 2012.
Mrs. Gaub is survived by her children, Dennis (Carolyn), of Belgrade, Deb (Dana) Bosse, of Mechanicsville, Va., Marah (Ron) Raynock, of Missoula, Mark (Mary), of Brookfield, Wis., Tammy (Jon) Rehborg, of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Tim, of Denver; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled Friday, November 21, 1 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Gardens with burial to follow in the Sunset cemetery. Pastor Justin Cloute, of Living Savior Lutheran Church, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to local chapters of the Alzheimer's Association. Condolences for the family may be left at www.missoulafuneralhomes.com
