Marjorie A. Castles

Marjorie Akin Castles, 90, of Superior, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the Mineral Community Nursing Home of natural causes.

She was born on July 26, 1924, in Missoula, to Edward Akin and Angela Reeves Akin. She attended the University of Montana where she met her future husband, Thomas B. Castles. They married in 1944 while he was on convalescent leave from the military after being seriously wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. Tom and Marge owned and operated Castles Market in Superior for many years.

Marge's passion was her animals. The home ranch became a haven for animals of all kinds. She had one of the first llama herds in Montana, miniature horses, Arabian horses, peacocks and every exotic chicken and pheasant she could find! At one time she also had wallabies, a rhea, African pygmy goats, Japanese deer, and the favorite, a tame European fallow deer, Dennis. Marge enjoyed sharing these animals bringing them for a petting zoo at the local fair and also entertained Head Start groups from Missoula and local school kids. Everyone was given a box of animal crackers and a peacock feather. Her grandchildren remember accompanying her on trips to llama conventions and shows in the Northwest.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents; husband Tom; all of her brothers and sisters and a granddaughter, Myranda. Survivors include her children, Tom Castles (Gloris) of Columbus and Cathy Kuhl (Ken) of Superior plus many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be Monday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Superior. Friends are invited to joint the family after at the Kuhl ranch for lunch and sharing of happy memories of Marge's life.

Memorials may be made to Mountain View Assisted Living or Mineral Community Hospital in Superior.
