Obituary for Lucille M. James

13 hours ago(0) CommentsMISSOULA – Lucille M. James, 93, was called home Thursday, May 16, 2013. She was born in Missoula on Dec. 15, 1919, to Peter and Martha Jacobsen, the oldest of 10 children.

Lucille attended two one-room elementary schools, Warren Creek and Montour. She graduated from Missoula County High School. She married the love of her life, Donald James, on Jan. 25, 1941. After the marriage, Donald and Lucille lived in a cabin in Woodworth that was built with Don's own hands. While living in Woodworth, Lucille played piano in a band for dances at Ovando and Helmville. She also played the organ for church in Ovando.

In 1960, she and Don moved to Potomac, where Don worked loading logs for Champion and Lucille worked as office administrator and secretary. She held those positions for 13 years. She was extremely well liked by everyone in the logging industry, and they affectionately called her the "camp queen." Upon their retirement in 1980, she and Don bought a home and moved to Missoula.

They enjoyed a long and happy retirement filled with dancing, playing cards, cruises, journeys to visit family and friends, and wonderful trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Canada, Wales, the Panama Canal and many other places.

Among the things Lucille enjoyed in life were gardening, craftwork, playing her keyboard and spending time with friends. In earlier years, she enjoyed chauffeuring her older lady friends to various functions.

Lucille loved her family and was blessed during her life with two children; son, Ron; and daughter, Jeanie; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanie Hemphill of Missoula; daughter-in-law, Teresa James of Woodworth; grandchildren, Curtis (Laura) Hemphill and Candace (Jack) Harpole of Portland, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Samantha Hemphill and Zoie Harpole; brothers, Peter (Adeline) Jacobsen and Dean Jacobsen and sister-in-law Del Rose Jacobsen, all of Missoula; Betty Touchette of Frenchtown; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald James; son, Ronald James; grandson, Jason James; brothers, Frank Jacobsen, Don Jacobsen, Tony Jacobsen, Bob Jacobsen and Joseph Jacobsen; and sister, Isabell Schreckendgust.

Donations in Lucille's name may be made to Camp Mak-A-Dream, P.O. Box 1450, Missoula, MT 59806.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 20, at Garden City Funeral Home with burial at Missoula Cemetery. A reception will follow at Garden City's Community Center.
