April 21, 1918-Nov. 24, 2012 MISSOULA – Bill couldn't catch a break as Lorraine joined him in heaven shortly after midnight on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012.
Born April 21, 1918, in Butte to Walter Francis and Edna Keenan McGrath, Lorraine Dorothy lived with her two brothers, Walter and "Tim" in various places on the Butte Hill. At an early age, abandoned by her mother, Lorraine and her brothers were placed in the Paul Clark Home in Butte until they were taken in by their uncle "Muggs" McGrath of Dillon. Lorraine was always grateful to Muggs and Hazel for giving her a roof over her head. She graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1936. Lorraine worked at JCPenney in Dillon after graduation. During that time, she met one handsome guy from Roundup who worked at the gas station ... it was Bill! And the rest was history.
Lorraine and Bill were married on Oct. 10, 1940, in St. Rose Catholic Church in Dillon. Their overwhelming love for Butte made it an easy choice on where they wanted to raise their family.
They lived a great life at 962 Lewisohn St. for more than 50 years. Lorraine was a great mom who was active in the Immaculate Conception Parish. After her kids were raised, Lorraine worked in the radiology department at St. James Hospital. She retired in 1985. In 2004, Bill and Lorraine moved to Missoula to be cared for by their children, Jim and Patti. Lorraine maintained her home in Missoula until August 2010.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, who died in 2011; her parents; brothers, Walter and Tim; uncle and aunt, Muggs and Hazel McGrath.
She is survived by her children, Bill (Marilyn) of Butte, Jim (Sue) of Missoula, Patti Welch (Glen) of Missoula; grandchildren, Wendy Welch of Las Vegas, Scott (Kendra) Welch of Missoula, William of Seattle, and Amy of Michigan. Extended family members include, Hazel McGrath Lear of Kalispell, Cass and Mark Maki, Colleen and Mel Jones of Washington state, Mick and Linda Hughes of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Godchild Geri Hughes of Arizona and last but not least, "Katie," the fat cat.
Special thanks to Mick and Linda Hughes and their families for the love and devotion shown to Lorraine and Bill over the years. Also, a special thank you to Glen Welch and Sue Polich, whose love and support for our parents the past eight years was very much appreciated.
Lorraine received excellent care at the Village Health Care Facility in Missoula these past two years. Special thanks to Alvin Richard, Lorraine and Bill's nurse, whose care and compassion was beyond words; Geri Howard, roommate extraordinaire; Rosie Alverez, super woman; as well as Kathy Hammond and the entire staff at Village.
As per Lorraine's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
Cremation & Burial Society of the Rockies is assisting the family.
