Obituary for Lee Gordon

The son of George Gordon and Rita Shyer, Lee was born Jan. 4, 1940, and grew up in the Los Angeles area with his older sister Laurel. At the age of 19, Lee was drafted into the Army, where he served for more than two years, before being honorably discharged. After leaving the Army, Lee got a degree in electrical technology from LA Trade Tech in 1966. In 1968, Lee worked on Eugene McCarthy's presidential campaign and was an alternate at the Democratic Party convention. In 1969, Lee traveled for a year throughout Europe and North Africa. While in Denmark, he met a woman from Missoula. On his return, he moved north and enrolled at the University of Montana. While the relationship did not last, Lee loved Missoula and made it his home for most of the remainder of his life. In 1973, Lee got a Bachelor of Arts degree in art and continued with postgraduate studies at the University of Montana. Jeweler, painter, photographer, electrician, property manager and political activist – Lee touched many people. Lee managed a number of rental properties in Missoula and was an active member of the Missoula community. Lee was a generous and consistent supporter of the Democratic Party, including service on the Missoula County Democratic Party Central Committee, and was a board member of Montana NARAL Pro-Choice for many years. Lee was a strong advocate for artists and the arts and participated in many community groups, including Missoula's Senior Forum and the Friendship Force.

Lee passed away due to a heart attack Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014. He was 74 years old. Lee's sister Laurel passed away last year. Lee is survived by his brother-in-law, Hubert; and his two nephews, Steven and Lindsey. A gathering of friends and family in memory and celebration of Lee's life will be held at the Welcoma Club at 3108 Clark St., in Missoula from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20
