At age 97, on Monday, Oct. 25, 2013, Lana died of natural causes at the Village Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Scottsburg, Ind., to Basil and Mattie Pearl Stuart.
She attended through 11th grade at Wyandotte County High School in Kansas City, Kan. Lana received her GED in the late 1960s and was very proud of it. She married Mack F. Johnson in 1939; they divorced in 1966. She was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism; Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge (Missoula); and a Baptist.
She grew up and lived in the Midwest, and moved to Montana in 1993. She was a very good bowler, could climb windmills, excellent needlewoman and seamstress, could salt birds' tails (just ask), was adventurous, had a wicked sense of humor, didn't like the cold, loved the mountain summers, loved Christmas, and was a ceramicist, a poet and storyteller. Most of all, she was a great mom and loved us all unconditionally.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Basil Albert Stuart and Mattie Pearl Deucer; brothers, Everett Wayne Stuart, Thomas Earl Stuart, Wilber Gale Stuart and Walter Roscoe Stuart; sisters, Katie Lillian Meier and Inez Marie Eye; and great-grandnephew, Daniel Jason Grady.
Survivors are her children, L. Jane Richards (Missoula), Jeanita L. Christian (Conway, S.C.), William M. "Bill" Johnson (Hillsborough, N.C.), Ann Lynne (Roger) Kubik (Westminster, Colo.) and David K. (Lara) Meier (Rockford, Ill.); grandchildren, Peter Lewis Christian, Virginia Lee Christian, Angela Jane (Christian) Sierpinski, Cassandra Lynne Johnson, Kelli Nicole (Kubik) Will, David K. Meier Jr., Heath Eberly and Darone McManer; special niece Norita Lee (Best) Webb, nephew Freddie Meier and other nieces and nephews; and great-grandchildren, Eve Christian, Kyle Christian, Logan Sierpinski, Raven McManer and Eli Kubik.
A memorial potluck/party will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the WWII Administration Building at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula, 10 Fort Missoula Road (look for the balloons). Burial will be in Conway, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, you can choose to make a donation to the Lana L. Johnson Memorial Fund for the KITCHEN PROJECT at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula
