Obituary for Kathryn "Kaye" Helms

Kathyrn "Kaye" Helms, passed away on March 26, 2015 at the age of 93, from common aging problems. She was born to Ukrainian immigrant parents who homesteaded on a dry land farm near Gorham, ND. She was a first generation American and one of 16 children.
Kaye attended high school in Columbus and Big Timber, MT. She met and married her first husband, Paul Carter, who was a pharmacist at a local drug store in Big Timber. Her husband was a pharmacy graduate from the University of Montana. They had one child, a son who is now a retired dentist in Colorado Springs, CO. Kaye has three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and twin great great granddaughters to be born in April 2015, and a living sister and brother.
Kaye had a vivid career. She followed her first husband who was in the military during WWII, She began her civil service career at Bethesda, MD when her husband was assigned there. Then when he was transferred to Chicago, she worked for the Corps. of Engineers. After his departure overseas, Kaye returned to Montana. After her husband's discharge from the military, they settled in Bozeman. She then got a job with the U.S. Forest Service, where she completed 25 years of service, mostly as an assistant personnel officer. She retired from federal service in 1976 with 35 years of government service.
When following her first husband when he was stationed at various military posts, she had the benefit of being in or traveling through all but five of the United States.
Kaye enjoyed golf and garnered a respectable handicap of 11. When circumstances permitted, she entered many local golf tournaments and a few regional ones. She had other hobbies like cooking, entertaining friends, enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and crocheting. She crocheted seven lace table cloths for family members and herself.
Kaye married Roger Helms of Missoula in September 1979. He too, retired from the Forest Service after an extended career. They have made their home in Missoula since then.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home & Crematory. A rosary recitation will be held at Garden City Funeral Home on Wed. April 8, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9th with a reception to follow in Reidy Hall. Burial will take place at the Tobacco Valley Cemetery in Eureka, MT on Friday, April 10th at 1:00 p.m.
