Superior - Joyce Woodbridge Stancliffe, 87, of Superior, Montana, passed away peacefully at home of natural causes on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.
She was born, Doris Joyce Woodbridge, on January 31, 1926, in L'Anse, Michigan to Ernest John and Cora Esther (Irwin) Woodbridge, she had 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Joyce graduated from Graveraet High School in Marquette, Michigan in 1943 and from St. Luke's Hospital of Nursing, as a Registered Nurse, in 1946.
Joyce was working as a nurse in Tulare, California when she met Dr. Floyd Savillian Stancliffe. They were married in 1950, and moved to Superior, where they started a family. They left Superior in 1956 so Floyd could pursue additional education. Floyd and Joyce returned to Superior when they retired in 1987. They had eight children and lived in five states over the years.
Joyce was very involved in politics, and frequently campaigned for honest candidates she liked, regardless of party. In 1970, she ran for Congress while living in California, under the banner of the American Independent Party.
She found friendship with all people, regardless of origin or status, and looked for opportunities to lift others. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many Church callings over the years. She loved to play the piano and organ and often served as the Church organist where they lived. Joyce loved books of all kinds and was an avid reader.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, and her son, Floyd "Bud" Woodbridge Stancliffe, who died at age 10.
She is survived by five sons and two daughters and their families, James of Provo, Utah, Denise Crawford of Mesa, Arizona, Robert of Fort Worth, Texas, Richard of New Orleans, Louisiana, George of Vancouver, British Columbia, Jared of Bakersfield, California, and Pam Theriault of Bakersfield, California.; sister Wilma Petrasky of Belleville, Michigan, and brother William "Bill" Woodbridge of Cudahy, Wisconsin. Joyce had 41 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Joyce will be missed by the many people whose lives were the better for having known her. She was unselfish in her love and generous in her support of those in need. She was a loving mother, a loyal friend, and a stalwart disciple of her Savior. She was cared for at home in her last years by wonderful and devoted caregivers, Sheila Schlueter, Laura Monfore and others – to whom the family is very grateful.
Visitation will be 9:15 to 9:45 am Monday, June 24, 2013 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Superior. The funeral will begin at 10 am. Interment will be at the Superior Cemetery.
