Joseph Dominic Cancellare, 89 of Missoula, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at Community Hospital, of cancer.
He was born on July 8, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York to Dominic and Viola Cancellare. As a young boy he lived in Brooklyn and later moved to Lynbrook, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Preparatory High School in 1949. He attended college on the GI Bill and participated in ROTC. He graduated in 1953 from Fordham University, Bronx, New York with a degree in Political Science. Post college he joined the United States Air Force. He was an Intelligence Officer SAC.
He married Patricia O'Connor of Baldwin, NY in 1953. They had four children, Joseph, Sheila, Andrea and Regina. They later divorced. He had a long career in sales management that took him across the United States and overseas. In 1978 he married Rita Dungan of Missoula, Montana.
Joseph was an avid sports fan both as a spectator and participant. He began skiing at the age
of 10 and skied for 77 years. He shared his passion for the slopes with many friends and family. He was a ski instructor for a few years and introduced many to the sport. As soon as the snow melted, he could often be found playing a round of 9 or 18 at Larchmont Golf Course in Missoula. He was a student of the game and never stopped trying to improve his play. He loved the University of Notre Dame and all things "IRISH" and in the Fall, he rarely missed an airing of a Notre Dame Football Game. During baseball season he was a devoted fan of his beloved New York Yankees.
Survivors include his wife, Rita, Missoula, one sister Sydell Kopfman, Wyoming, Son Joseph G.
Cancellare, Phoenix, AZ; Sheila (John) O'Brien, Missoula; Regina (Paul) DeBenedictis, Andover, MA.; Stepchildren; Mike (Kathy) Dungan, Missoula, and Jim (Erica) Dungan, Belgrade, MT. along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Viola & Dominic Cancellare, his Daughter Andrea Cancellare, and Grandson Jared Nelson.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Missoula, Tuesday,
March 1, 2022, at 10:00 am followed by a private Interment.
