On Wednesday, May 1, 2013 the world lost a great cartaker
John was born April 17, 1954, in Minneapolis to parents Clarence and Odella Weinert. He grew up in Fridley, Minn., with his little sister Julie. He and Bob Randall had been like brothers since they met in high school. John went on to study forestry at the University of Minnesota. John met Cathy and they married in 1976. They moved to Montana, where John started his career in forestry. He began his career working for the U.S. Forest Service in Troy and later took a job with the Bureau of Land Management in Missoula in 1978. John had a love of the wilderness and believed in taking care of the Earth. We have been told it was an honor and privilege to work with John. John and Cathy raised two mountain girls, Jessica and Blair. With all of the things he loved, he took the greatest pride in his girls.
John seemed quiet, but always had that twinkle in his eye and that ability to find fun in whatever it was he was doing. He loved swimming at the Y, spending time on the river, dancing, hiking and walking his dog, Toby. John was never far away from his guitar and enjoyed playing for friends and family. John was a family man and enjoyed the opportunity to entertain and feed the people he loved. He did this often as a camp cook and as a host at one of his famous cream can dinners. Anyone who knew John knew his kindness and love of helping people. We have lost a sweet soul from this Earth.
He leaves behind too many family and close friends, it is impossible to list them all. We imagine John at peace walking his dog Toby along the river. For the rest of us, we are left with memories of a wonderful man whom we will miss for the rest of our lives.
Family and friends are meeting on Sunday, May 5, at Bonner Park from 1 to 3 p.m.
