GREENOUGHâ,**– Born July 7, 1925, in Chicago to George and Mildred Stone, John passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Missoula.
John came west with his family as a young man to eventually settle in the Blackfoot Valley on the E Bar L Ranch. It was there that he met Jane Bidwell and they were married in November 1954. They found a beautiful spot to live on the Clearwater River, the Rocking Chair Ranch, where they raised two boys, George and Jim.
John had a passion for life and everything around him; the E Bar L inspired him to perfect every aspect known to ranching. A "jack-of-all-trades," he worked tirelessly for all who surrounded him.
In the early 1960s, they bought the Rolling Stone Ranch in Ovando, where he raised Hereford cows. Between the two ranches, he made many friends and inspired great things for the valley.
George and I were lucky to have such a great man in our lives. Dad inspired compassion, respect and vitality in our young lives, nurturing us to believe in successes, not failure. He understood people, connected and maintained strong relationships wherever he went, and made sure we carried those values.
Dad met people from all over the world; it was his wide smile, strong grip and wit that made them feel welcome. They related to his way of life and carried those thoughts and feelings to others who came to enjoy the Blackfoot. People who watched him cast a dry fly into the river were captivated by the beauty and grace that he displayed, never needing to catch a fish, just connect to the place. Most importantly, he loved life and everything that surrounded it. He chose to embrace us all with a lifetime as a true gentleman.
As we are saddened by the loss, reflecting on what we all consider an amazing opportunity to celebrate, a husband, dad, grandfather and friend; John Stone, you are our HERO.
To all friends and family, thank you from Jane, George, Shar, Colleen, Jim and Brady Stone.
In respect of his wishes, there will be no services. The family will have a celebration of John's life in June 2014 at the Rolling Stone Ranch; date will be announced.
Memorials may be made to Blackfoot Challenge, P.O. Box 103, Ovando, MT 59854.
