Obituary for John Edward Stenger

– John Edward Stenger, 69, of Missoula, died of natural causes at his home on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015.

John was born on July 5, 1946, to Leo and Marcella Stenger in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended school at Nativity of Our Lord and Cretin High School, graduating in 1964. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in 1968 and served in the U.S. Army in Dahn, West Germany receiving an honorable discharge in 1970. He completed his Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Iowa in 1974.

John married Kathleen Burns on Aug. 14, 1971, in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota. John and Kathy moved to Iowa City, Iowa, after their marriage. In 1974 they moved to Missoula, where John worked at the University of Montana in the Center for Student Development as a Counseling Psychologist. Following UM, John worked at St. Patrick Hospital and then joined Kathy in real estate, finishing his career at Insured Titles in Missoula.

John was active in a number of organizations in Missoula, serving on the boards of directors for United Way, Southside Lions Club and Missoula Community Chorus. He also sang with the Mendelssohn Club. John and Kathy attended Christ the King and St. Anthony Catholic Parishes.

John loved the outdoors of Montana. He and Kathy spent the past several years restoring a wood timber home near Glacier Park, which they visited often. He enjoyed paddling kayaks on Lake McDonald, flying kites on annual trips to the Washington coast, and hiking in the Rattlesnake Recreation Area. John and Kathy loved to travel, explore antique stores and spend time with their grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Kathy; sons Rob and wife Melodie and Justin; grandchildren, Oliver, Elliot, Timothy and Rose; brother Bob and wife Mary Ann of Louisville, Kentucky, and sister Mitzie Rohleder of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. John was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Marcella.

A vigil service with time of remembrance will be on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony Parish. Funeral Services will be Monday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Parish. Luncheon at St. Anthony Parish Life Center and Internment at St. Mary's Cemetery will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Montana Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, Missoula Community Chorus or St. Anthony's Catholic Parish. Donations sent to the family will be used to purchase a memorial bench at St. Mary's Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be sent to missoulafuneralhomes.com.
