John Howard Owens, M.D., 78, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014, with his family by his side.
He was born Nov. 30, 1935, in Independence, Missouri, to Eula Smith and Norman Owens. He graduated from Ruskin High School and attended Kansas City Junior College, and transferred and graduated from the University of Missouri. He then graduated from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, where he completed a pathology residency. While in medical school, he met Reeda Ramick. They married in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, on Aug. 14, 1961.
He spent three years as a member of the U.S. Army at the Medical Research and Nutrition Laboratory in Denver. Following his residency, he spent 18 years as a pathologist and coroner in Sedalia, Missouri. The family then moved to Missoula, where he practiced until retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Reeda; four children, daughter Sara (Stephen) Kaminski of Kansas City, Missouri, son Matt (Joan) Owens of Denver, son David (Tricia) Owens of Missoula, son Dr. Daniel Owens of Florence, South Carolina; and his eight grandchildren, the lights of his life, ReeAnn and Cara Kaminski, Alicia Phebus and Chris Paul, Rylee and Ashlee Owens and Parker and Greyson Owens.
There will be no services. Memorials can be sent to Mountain Home Montana, or the Lowell School Family Resource Center.
