.— Joanne Verlanic-Scherger passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, of natural causes, at her home. She was 66.
Joanne was born on Sept. 13, 1951 to Orville and Betty Verlanic in Anaconda, MT. She was the eldest of a family of seven children to Orville and Betty Verlanic and led the way for all the others in the family.
She attended grade school in Anaconda and Livingston, and graduated from Hellgate High School in 1969.
She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Warm Springs State Hospital and Community Nursing Home for several years. She graduated from the MSU School of Nursing in 1984 with her RN degree. For most of her career she was a nurse at Hillside Manor nursing home, eventually becoming the Director of Nursing there. She dedicated her career to geriatric nursing services and helped many people through the difficult stages of old age and end of life.
After retirement, Joanne and George enjoyed traveling and took a trip to Paris, New York City, and another to the Holy Land. They also enjoyed spending time together, and taking frequent walks, with their 2 Welsh Corgies, Rudy and Alfie (“the boys”).
Joanne was preceded in death by her father Orville Verlanic, Sr.
She is survived by her husband George, whom she met in 1974. They were married in 1979.
She is also survived by her mother Betty Verlanic, and her 6 brothers and sisters—brother Orville Jr. “Butch” Verlanic and his wife Lynn, of Thompson Falls, with Butch’s daughter Adrienne (Suzanne) of Helena; sister Mary and Mike Hamlin, and children Mike (Arwyn), Cassie (Zack) their daughter Addie, and Markie (Gdansk); brother Jim Verlanic of Lolo and his wife Barb; sister Gail Verlanic and Dave Severson with their daughter Kelsie (Boe); brother Paul Verlanic and his daughters Jenna and Brooke; brother Mark Verlanic and Beth with sons Jon and Nick; and uncle Joe Verlanic (Sheila) of Drummond.
She is also survived by George’s family—brother Tom Scherger, with sons Patrick and Quentin of Washington, and nephews Nick and Tucker Moran; brother Scott Scherger and wife Shelly of Arizona; and Jon Scherger and wife Annie, son Bill and wife Casey, daughter Katie of Guernsey, WY, and son Jon Paul of Sidney, MT and daughter Kristi and her daughters and son in Ohio.
A rosary will be held Thursday night February 1, at 7 p.m. Garden City Funeral Home. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held for Joanne at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Christ the King (1400 Gerald Ave.), with Father Jeff Fleming officiating. After mass there will be a reception and luncheon in Christ the King’s parish hall.
