MISSOULA - Jerry Dean Ransom, 75, died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones on June 25, 2013. He had been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma just two weeks prior.
Jerry was born Oct 22, 1937, in Huron, S.D. to Leonard Penniston Ransom and Elsie Mabel Quiram. He was the 3rd of 4 brothers. He was raised on a farm in the Sand Creek area near Wessington, SD.
After graduation from Wessington High School in 1956, Jerry enlisted in the Army on July 20, 1956. He served in Germany and Beirut, Lebanon as a member of Co. A 9th Engr Bn. He was discharged July 11, 1959.
On returning to Huron, Jerry married Elizabeth Marie Mentele, Dec. 24, 1959. From this union 4 children were born, Douglas Dean, Rhonda Marie, Michael Leonard, and Mark Allan Ransom. They divorced July 16, 1981. He worked at many jobs during his early years, Culligan Water, Terrace Park Creamery and West Park Truck Stop. In 1977 he started his career as a Long Haul Owner/Operator. The majority of this time he was leased to Sammons Trucking, Missoula, Mt and Yellowstone Trucking, Coeur D' Alene, Id. He retired Oct 20, 1999. On Sept 25, 1983, Jerry married Glenda LaRita Purdy-Kerr in State Line, Nev. Jerry's life revolved around trucking, Golf, introduced to him by Glen Purdy at age 55, and extensive travel upon retirement. He visited Alaska 3 times, cruise, air, and Alaska Hwy, the Midwest, and the West Coast from Wa, Or, to Ca. Two months before his death he visited Hawaii and returned to Huron, SD for a last
visit with his extended family and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, La Verne and Jimmy Ransom.
He is survived by his wife Glenda, of Missoula, Daughter, Rhonda, of Huron, SD, Sons; Doug (Sheree), of Lincoln City, OR, Michael, Ethan, SD and Mark (Barb), of Huron, SD and brother, Larry of Huron, SD, Sisters-in-Law; Dorothy, Huron, SD, Dot, of Marine, ll. Four grandchildren; Ryan Root (Jill) of Watertown, SD, Jeremy McHugh, Huron, SD, Natashia Ransom, Madison, SD and Brittany Wingert (Brandon), Chamberlain, SD. Two Great Grandchildren, Jake Root, and Hailey Wingert and numerous nephews and nieces. And his loving miniature schnauzers Breezy and Salty Dog.
He will be cremated and buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home followed by Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Military Honors with a reception to follow. In lieu of Flowers, please donate to your local Humane Society, Animeals or Senior Citizen Meals on Wheels Programs.
