Jennie Mae (Hammill) Nye, 88, passed away on Oct. 12, 2014 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Jennie was born on October 31, 1925 in Omak, Washington to Elvina (Jones) and Carl Hammill.
Jennie attended schools at St. Ignatius, Charlo, North Moiese, and Thompson Falls, Montana. She was a member of the cheerleaders and played the trombone in the band. She loved music and taught herself to play the guitar, harmonica, and mouth harp. She loved country music and sang and harmonized with her sister Anna.
After graduation at Thompson Falls she attended telegraphy school in Spokane, and then went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a telegraph operator, working in Paradise, Thompson Falls, Sandpoint, Idaho, and Butte, Mont. While she worked in Butte, she met and later married Leon G. Nye on Nov. 23, 1948. He also worked for the Northern Pacific R.R. as a conductor and brakeman. Later they moved to Missoula where he continued working for the railroad. Jennie worked here as a telephone operator for a time, then in a drugstore and finally at the Golden Pheasant restaurant until it closed. Jennie attended college at the U of M, majoring in World History.
Her husband Leon G. Nye passed away in 1980. Her parents Elvina and Carl Hammill, Sister Lucinda Mart, brother, Joseph Hammill have also passed.
She is survived by her sister Anna Wells, friend of the family, Matthew Wiles, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Jennie enjoyed excellent health for so many years until she developed Alzheimers disease in her seventies.
Cremation will take place with the assistance of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Please call Kelly at 251-0458 for location and directions.
