Jean Audrey Schriver, 82, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, while in the wonderful care of Riverside Health Care Center. Jean Hazen was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where she attended St. Joseph's Academy, an all-girls Catholic school. The caption for the picture in her "1949 Hour Glass" yearbook captured her well: "Her charming ways, a winning smile, loads of friends, and lots of style." During her high school years, she was speech club president, a member of the mission group CSMC, Glee Club and loved bowling.
After graduation, she married Richard Schriver, and together they had three girls. This collective handful were named Ann, Kathy and Janie. Mom was an avid reader and an amazing cook. Some of our fondest memories are the large gatherings for various annual feasts, including the highly anticipated "grouse feed' each year. All participants would donate the upland birds that they had harvested, leaning heavily on Kathy and Mark's contribution, with Jean then preparing all the dishes. Her prowess in the kitchen could have given the Food Network a run for its money. Her mind remained very sharp her entire life, probably due to her love of reading, with a strong leaning toward history.
She loved many card games, from bridge to poker. While at Riverside, she made many friends and enjoyed all the activities like bingo and Trivial Pursuit. We're also suspicious that she had a little enterprise going there because of her constant need for bags of cough drops, far more than could possibly be consumed by one individual. Perhaps used as barter but more likely shared with others. She also was known for her vibrancy and for being the life of the party, despite being a bit "gruff" at times. You never had to question what was on her mind because she was not shy about expressing herself. The staff knew her as a challenging kick-in-the-pants and she will be greatly missed.
The joy of her life was being with Dad and her two beloved dogs, Fritz and Hans. Fishing and hunting trips with family and friends were not to be believed. Did we ever have fun! Special times sitting around the campfire swapping stories were especially great, and we even found time to get on the water or out in the woods. We have to believe she has now rejoined Dick and the wonderful friends and family we've lost, and they're sitting around the campfire again. We're guessing they're being asked to please hold it down a bit.
Mom is survived by her daughters and their families, Ann (Pati) Talalotu in Frenchtown, Kathy (Mark) Braddock in Evaro and Janie (John) Talalotu in Kalispell; grandchildren Jennifer, Tasha, Tane, Lelani, Leah, Bo, Jesse, Joey and Tony; and great-grandchildren Eric, Jaiden, Alii, Lavea and Lila. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.
She was preceded in death by Dick (Dad), David and Jan, Marilyn Schaff, Walt and Ramona, and Kenny and Mike Flink. Sadly there are too many friends to name, but all are deeply missed.
At Mom's request, there will be no service. Any donations in memory of our mother please direct to AniMeals to honor her love of animals.
