Janis Marie Plunkett, wife, mother and recognized stylish lady died Sunday, June 19, 2016 after a protracted battle with an unrelenting illness.
Janis was born in Hatton, ND to Leo and Betty McMahon who later moved to Montana where Janis finished high school and nurse’s training. She met Robert T. Plunkett at a wedding following his return from WWII. She was the Maid of Honor and he was the Best Man. Their own ceremony was March 28, 1948 and they remained dedicated to one another until Robert’s passing in 2002.
Together they had two children, Tim (Marti) of Kalispell and Lisa (Boris and Millie) of Missoula. Janis is also survived by three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Janis was first a wife and mom but she was also a volunteer with the local blood drive and St. Patrick Hospital. She was well read, a professional quality seamstress, terrific cook and absolute crusher of cryptograms, crossword puzzles and any game with cards. She played the banjo and studied jazz piano.
After Robert retired they traveled extensively and split time at their home in Missoula and cabin on Flathead Lake. Along the way she dodged death at least twice, following necessary surgery and a triumph over cancer. If you ever drove with her, you could think of your safe arrival as a triumph, too. She was fun, feisty and always ready for the next adventure. Her love of ice cream and Ferragamos was surpassed only by her love of family and friends.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at The Springs in Missoula and the support provided by Partners in Home Care Hospice for all the help navigating this difficult journey. We would encourage all who can to donate to the effort to end Alzheimer’s.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11am Thursday June 23 at Garden City Funeral Home with a graveside services following at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at 1pm.
