James "Harvey" Vincent

July 2, 1944 — February 28, 2021

In this time of looking back and celebrating the life of Harvey Vincent it is incredibly hard to sum up a life well lived in just a few words. James “Harvey” Vincent, 76, of Superior, Montana, passed from the mortal world on February 28, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula. He was surrounded by his daughters and son-in-law at his passing.
Harvey was born July 2, 1944 in Tacoma, WA to James Franklin Vincent (d. 1984) and Viola Vincent (d. 2012). Harvey was the youngest of four children and the only boy. His sisters had a habit of dressing him in their old dresses when left unsupervised. As an adult he was married three times resulting in a son and two daughters of his own and one stepdaughter.
As the Vietnam War policies drafted his peers, Harvey chose to enlist in the Navy in October 1966 and served until December 1970. Harvey enjoyed reminiscing about his time stationed in Honolulu while in the Navy. After two marriages and the arrival of his first two children Harvey felt the call to service again and joined the National Guard in October 1977 and served until his retirement in July 2004. Memorable moments during his time with the Guard were the opportunities to support rescue and recovery efforts after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens and firefighting efforts in Yellowstone National Park in 1988. He was proud to have helped save the park. At retirement he was a Staff Sergeant. That one weekend a month and one week a year was likely highly anticipated with three teenaged daughters at home.
In 1970s, Harvey moved to Spirit Lake, Idaho, then later to Fargo, North Dakota, and then to the Spokane, Washington area. Harvey moved to Superior, MT in 1986 to work at the Mineral Independent when it was owned by John Peters, his brother-in-law, using skills he learned during his time in the Navy. He was actively involved with the Mineral County Search and Rescue as well as the Superior Volunteer Fire Department during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Harvey loved and anticipated organizing the annual Search and Rescue Easter Egg Hunt. It was always so gratifying to him to see how excited and happy the local kids were after the event. Throughout his life, Harvey found joy and happiness in giving back to his community through his volunteer activities. Even in the last months of his life he enjoyed keeping busy doing yard work and lending a hand down at the S & S. He was an avid outdoorsman that particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Later in life his favorite moments were those he got to spend up in the mountains with his best friend Ed.
Harvey is survived by sister Marveen Peters, son James Donald Vincent (52), daughters Tammy Bullock (45, Dale Bullock) and Amanda Vincent (39), and stepdaughter Karry Blake (44, Kris Bunch). He is also survived by four granddaughters Jackie Vincent (27), Nina Vincent (24), Lilly Bunch (14), and Harper Bunch (9) and two great granddaughters Evelynn Halverson-Vincent (2) and Reagan Anderson (due June 2021).
