James J. O'Toole

James O'Toole, sportsman, naturalist, teacher and environmental advocate, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the age of 94. Raised in Woodbridge, N.J., he hitchhiked to Logan and attended Utah State University. He graduated in forestry in 1943 then worked in Yellowstone National Park before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force where he served on a B-29 crew.

After the war, Jim received his master's degree in biochemistry from Utah State and his Ph.D. in animal physiology from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to work and he married the love of his life, Marge. He continued his career at Iowa State University, where he was fundamental in the development of one of the first environmental studies programs in the country.

Jim and Marge moved to their home in Alberton in 1985 where they enjoyed a long, idyllic retirement, indulging his love of trout fishing in a beautiful setting on the Clark Fork. His strong-willed, passionate character, along with a roaring sense of humor fostered many life-long, endearing friendships.

The sudden passing of Marge on March 27, 2013, created an absence in his life. Survivors include his daughters, Stephanie and Toni (Gregg) and son Peter (Deb); six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. To honor Jim's wishes there will be no service.
