James Francis Doyle Jr., 69, of Missoula, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at home after a courageous battle with ALS.
Jim, known as "Babe" by many close family and friends, was born July 12, 1945, in Helena to Ann and James Doyle Sr. He was the youngest of three boys. His family ranched in Helena, Twin Bridges and Sheridan before finally settling down in Florence. Jim graduated from Florence in 1964, receiving letters in both basketball and track. Jim continued ranching with his family until 1968, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He spent his 18 months stationed in Greece as a communications specialist. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Havre to attend school at Montana State University-Northern. While in Havre, he caught the eye of his future wife, Patti Beck, with his prized 1970 Ford Mustang. They were later married in 1973. Just shy of graduating with a degree in agriculture, Jim returned to the Bitterroot to help with the family ranch, where he continued to farm and ranch for the next 20 years.
For the past 11 years, he leased land out on Mullan Road, putting up hay every summer. With little more than a handshake, Jim built a close-knit clientele for his much sought-after hay. He also worked with the Missoula County Public Schools district, Beach Transportation and Lucky Lil's. Jim always looked forward to the spring and summer when he could climb up on his tractors and work the land in solitude. When he wasn't working, Jim enjoyed tinkering with his beloved '70 Mustang and spending time with his brother Mike, with whom he was very close.
After receiving the devastating diagnosis of ALS in late 2013, Jim continued to work and farm the best he could. His strong will and determination allowed him to enjoy one last spring and summer of farming. After reuniting with Patti, he moved home, where he was cared for by her and their daughters.
He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on a cold, snowy Sunday afternoon. Jim always lit up a room with his smile and was the master of many jokes and pranks. He had a magnetic and lovable personality that will be forever missed and cherished by many.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Ann and James Doyle Sr.; and his brother, Kenneth Doyle.
Survivors include his wife, Patti of Missoula; two daughters, Haley Doyle of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Carlyn Doyle of Great Falls; one brother, Mike (Annette) Doyle; and nieces and nephews.
Service will be Friday Jan. 2, at Garden City Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Viewing will begin at 9 a.m., followed by potluck reception and a burial at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m.
