MISSOULA – James "Jim" Axe, 53, of Missoula, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at his home in St. Ignatius in the presence of his loving family. Jim is now at rest after a heroic 10-month battle against cancer.
He was born June 21, 1959, in Billings to Lois Artzis and Harley Axe. He graduated from Billings West, then earned a degree in business finance at the University of Montana.
He married Katherine Axe on June 10, 1989. Together they raised three loving children and lived happily in Missoula. His greatest passion was his family.
For the past 10 years, Jim worked at Opportunity Resources. He also was a very successful entrepreneur. Businesses that he founded include Balloons R Us, Parker Manufacturing, Grand Prix Motoring Accessories, Media Brokers of America, Showcase Dog Grooming, Road Warrior Plus and Slightly Lifted Apparel.
Jim's favorite pastime was slalom water skiing. In 2000, he built Drag 'N' Fly Lake, one of Montana's premier private water ski lakes, located in St Ignatius.
Jim had a passion for the outdoors. He was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, snowboarder and snow skier. For many years, Jim enjoyed playing slow-pitch softball in Missoula. He was also a talented musician, who formed multiple bands. He played bass guitar in Hands Down, Ball and Jack, and most recently, Chele Bandulu.
Preceding Jim in death was his stepfather, Al Artzis. Cherishing his memory are Kathi, his loving wife of 24 years; and brother, Sam Artzis. Following in his footsteps are his children, Danielle, Jamie and Parker Axe. Keeping him in their hearts are mother, Lois Artzis; father, Harley Axe; sisters, Vicky Thuesen, Susan O'Leary and Theresa Axe; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends – you know who you are.
A private service for his family will be held Saturday, April 6. There will be a later celebration open to all who knew and loved Jim Axe.
