Helene Elizabeth Faix- Flohr, 91, of Missoula, died of heart failure on Monday November 6, 2017 at Community Hospital.
She was born on July 11, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to Mary and John Faix. Later in her childhood her family moved to a farm near Allentown, PA. She graduated from high school and completed some college coursework and had a lifelong love for learning. Professionally she worked in retail sales and was a sorority house mother at San Jose State (California), University of California Berkeley and Montana State University (Bozeman).
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, involved with Women of Spirit and a variety of other church activities. Her volunteer activities included serving through Missoula Aging Services and at Missoula Manor Homes where she was a resident. Earlier in her life she was involved as a leader with Cub Scouts and Girls Scouts.
She enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time outdoors. Her reading selections were varied, and travels included England, France, Germany and Hawaii. She cherished the time she was able to spend in Germany reconnecting with her mother’s side of the family. Walks at local parks or around the shores of Flathead Lake were treasured moments for her. One of her great joys was breathing in the northern California coast salt air and taking in views of the Pacific Ocean. Helene had a love of art and music that included attending concerts in the local parks and viewing art exhibits. She enjoyed living in “college towns” because of the diversity of ages, ideas and cultural opportunities and especially cherished the friendship and energy of younger individuals.
Helene was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Faix Jr., and a son Jeffrey Flohr. She is survived by her sister Margaret Reterink of San Jose California, her daughters Judith Flohr (Anne Gabbard-Alley) of Mt Crawford, Virginia, Nancy Nelson (Christopher) of Fairfield, California, a son Christian Flohr (Nadeen) of Missoula, Montana, granddaughter Kristy Nelson of Santa Rosa, California, niece Sonja Cody and family of California and nephew James Faix and family of Georgia.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer of 2018. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church and Missoula Aging Services or a charity of the donor’s choice.
