Helen Marie Gilmore Boyd passed away at 98 in Missoula, MT, June 16, 2022.
Marie was born in Highland, KS in 1924 to William Byron Gilmore and Helen Elizabeth Naugle Gilmore. Marie grew up on a farm and attended Highland schools, graduating from Highland High School in 1942. She earned an associate degree at Highland Jr. College in 1944 prior to attending the University of Kansas and Kansas University Medical School of Nursing in Kansas City, KS, graduating as an RN in 1947. Marie remained at KUMC until 1949 when she moved to Portland, OR. She was employed by University of Oregon Medical Center and later at the Sisters of Providence Hospital as night supervisor.
Marie enjoyed hiking, skiing and was an accomplished mountaineer. She was a member of the Mazamas Mountaineering Club and on November 8, 1952, the club presented Marie with the Sixteen Major Northwest Peaks Award. She was the 43rd recipient of this award.
In 1955, Marie moved to Whitefish MT where she continued her nursing career at North Valley Hospital. In Whitefish she met her husband to be, Robert C. Boyd of Great Falls, MT. They were married in the Whitefish Presbyterian Church in 1957 and settled in Great Falls where they raised three children.
Marie was active with Campfire Girls Council of Great Falls, Daughters of the Nile #3 and a member of Sapphire Temple #79 of Helena. She also belonged to Chapter Q, P.E.O. of Great Falls, MT.
Marie is survived by daughters, LeAnn Boyd of Missoula, MT and Dianne Boyd (Chris Harnish) of Seattle, WA and her son Robert C Boyd, Jr (Linda Brash) of Whitefish, MT. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Robert C. Boyd, Sr.
Cremation has taken place and no public services are planned. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery at Great Falls.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie’s name can be sent to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
