Gwen G. Norment, 89, died on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at the Riverside Health Care Center. She was a retired Unity minister who devoted most of her adult life to caring for other people.
Gwen was born in Portland, Ore., to parents of Scottish ancestry. For most of her youth she lived in Hollywood, where she worked at Columbia Studios. After spending much of her 30s and 40s raising a family, in 1969 she began ministerial studies at the Unity School of Christianity near Kansas City, Mo. She was ordained in 1972 and held positions in churches in Portland, Salem, San Francisco, Seattle, and Bellingham. Her last professional job involved "ministering" to Unity ministers in the Pacific Northwest. After 30 years of ministry she moved to Missoula in 2004, to be near to her family.
Gwen most loved her family, reading, nature and the ministry. She was a loving, generous and compassionate person who touched many lives. She shared her positive attitude about life with everyone she encountered. Her philosophy is summed up by the bumper sticker that she had on her last car: "Be Kind Today." Gwen graced the lives of her children, Pamela, Christopher, Lisa, Anne and Michelle.
Gifts in her memory can be made to the Humane Society of Western Montana, P.O. Box 1059, Missoula, MT 59806.
