Grant Marion Winn, 77, passed away after a long illness, in his home Tuesday, March 28, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Grant was born July 8, 1939 the fourth child of five and only son born to William Marion Winn and Marcella Andrew Winn of Idaho Falls, ID. He spent summers in Idaho working on ranches, winters skiing and school days dreaming. He often said if his teachers knew what he had accomplished they would roll over in their graves. Grant graduated from Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls in 1957. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah before enlisting in the Navy where he served as a medical corpsman. He married Carole Louise Robinson and had five children. During that time he completed a Bachelor degree in Microbiology from San Diego State in1970 and graduate work at University of Utah where he worked in open heart surgery. After his grant supported program was defunded at the University of Colorado he took a job in Plains, Montana as Chief Medical Technologist but was soon the administrator of Clark Fork Valley Hospital where he served for five years. In 1977 Grant accepted the position as CEO of Community Medical Center in Missoula, MT. where he devoted the next 27 years of his career retiring in 2003.
Grant married Larena Ann Ekman in 1981. During their nearly 37 years of marriage they brought six more children into the world, raised them and enjoyed 21 grand and great-grandchildren.
Grant’s hobbies included horseback riding and wilderness trekking, hunting, snow and water skiing, playing piano and singing choral music, travel and most of all, his family. His volunteer work included his church work in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Boy Scouts of America, FFA and 4-H, American Cancer Society, University of Montana and he served on many local and statewide boards and organizations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcella and Marion Winn, his sisters Gwen Chesley and husband Evan, Myrna Richardson and husband George and brothers-in-law Marvin Jorgensen and Lynn Hoppie; and his grandson, Quinton Winn. He has two surviving sisters Glenna Jorgensen of Idaho Falls, ID and Marian Hoppie of Mesa, AZ.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Missoula; his daughter Jymme Winn of Fullerton, CA; son Grant Winn, II and his wife Charity of Stevensville, MT; daughter Jennifer Mc Ginnis and husband Tim of Polson, MT; son Jonathan Winn and wife Amanda of Carmel, NY; son Michael Winn and wife Jessica of Coeur d’Alene, ID; son Matt Winn and wife Victoria of Wasilla, AK; son Marc Winn and wife Kendra of Florence, MT; sons Alex Winn and Zach Winn of Missoula and twin daughters Danielle Winn and Elyse Winn of Brooklyn, NY. Grand and great-grandchildren include: Tasia, Winn, Quinton Winn (deceased), Trent Winn, Sarah Winn, Holly Winn and Hunter Winn, Beth and Brandon Rau, Braydon Rau and Ben Rau, Alex Doll and Nate Doll; Eryn McGinnis and Shannon McGinnis; Emmett Winn and Helena Winn; Bella Winn, Fiona Winn, and Ava Winn; Alice Winn, Huck Winn, and Lydia Winn.
Services for Grant will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 3050 South Ave. West at 10 AM on Monday, April 3, 2017 followed by a luncheon and interment at 1PM at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery. Garden City Funeral Home is assisting the family.
