Missoula-Grace Frey Brooks, 92, died peacefully on Wed., Nov. 13, 2013 at Riverside Health Care. Grace was predeceased by her husband and partner, Russell and her son Leonard.
Those who knew Grace remember well her devotion to caring for her family, her solid work ethic, and her love for creating beautiful things from her gardens to her exquisite needlework.
Grace Mina Frey was born to Mina Ladyhoff and Alfred Frey in Bundy, MT April 15, 1921, the fifth of their six children, all of whom she outlived. When Grace was three, the family moved to St. Ignatius and settled on a ranch on Mission Creek at the foot of the Mission Mountains. Grace graduated from high school in St. Ignatius and worked as a nurses' aide at the hospital in St. Ignatius and also at Beckwith's store. She married Russell Brooks on July 5, 1945. Following the birth of their children, Russell and Grace moved into a new home Russell built on Gilbert Ave. in Missoula where they spent the next fifty years together.
In their home, Grace took great pride in caring for her family including grinding her own wheat for the bread she made, canning 175 jars of applesauce from Bitterroot apples she picked each fall, sewing extensively, making all of her family's clothing for many years and she was an avid bowler. Russell built a garden room on the back of their house so Grace could indulge her love of growing things year round.
Grace is survived by her son, Danny, a grand daughter and several nieces and nephews.
Garden City Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Cremation has occurred. At Grace's request there will be no funeral.
